We primarily offer the RCM curriculum in our piano program. But before beginning the
RCM method, students must begin with an alternate method. Some recommended
books are the ABC method by Boris Berlin for children ten and under, and Alfred's
Basic Adult Piano Course for the older beginner. A suitable age to start lessons is
around six or seven years old. However, the minimum requirements to begin lessons
are a knowledge of letters and numbers, and most importantly, an ability to
concentrate and pay attention to the teacher for at least 25 minutes.
In order to make suitable progress, it is imperative that any piano student have a
proper instrument to practice on. That means you must purchase an actual piano (as
opposed to an electronic keyboard) if you want to get the most out of your lessons. As
a piano student, you are not only learning the notes on the staff or on the keyboard,
you are also learning to manipulate the piano in order to achieve the proper sounds
while performing piano works. For more information about the differences between a
piano and a keyboard, read the following article, Electronic Keyboards vs. Acoustic
Pianos.
