Beginning September 2011, the Stephan Tan School of Music is proud to offer RCM theory
courses live online. This is a great opportunity for students to save time and money by
conveniently learning in the comfort of your own home or anywhere you have an internet
connection. Setup is simple, and the courses are well-organized and easy to follow.

About the instructor
Stephan Tan has studied at the University
of Toronto for his Bachelor of Music in
History and Theory as well as his Master
of Arts in Musicology. He holds an
A.R.C.T. from the RCM in Piano Teaching
and has been teaching theory for over 18
years in the GTA.
His communication and teaching methods
are effective and efficient and his number
one priority is the good success of each of
his students.

Royal Conservatory of Music theory requirements
When do you need theory lessons?
If you are studying Royal Conservatory curriculum and are currently in Grade 5 practical or
higher, theory lessons are mandatory for you in order to receive certification for your level.
If you are in:
You may also be eligible for high school credits if you complete the following:
The mark that will appear on your transcript is the average mark of your practical and theory
examination results. Talk to your guidance counsellor for more details.
If you are studying Royal Conservatory curriculum and are currently in Grade 5 practical or
higher, theory lessons are mandatory for you in order to receive certification for your level.
If you are in:
- Grade 5 you need Basic Rudiments.
- Grade 6 you need Intermediate Rudiments
- Grade 7 or 8 you need Advanced Rudiments
